The poems do open your eyes that there are others out there that are going through the same things you are. But every one deals with things differently and that's the hard part when you're trying to connect with people and their problems. But I do applaud this author for doing this and it's pretty awesome that your from Odenton too cuz I am too! But this book is worth the read and everyone should give it a try and recommend it to anyone going through something like this. It can help.Product details

Dodged Jason Humm 9781492134503 Books Reviews
I am not sure I can "rate" this book as it is personal to Jason. I, think it is incredible brave of him to share this insight into a dark time for him. I was touched, moved, cried, you name it, while reading. I think Jasons poems will have a different impact on everyone. I feel proud to call him a friend. If you think you know anyone who needs help, please do not hesitate to help. This is a serious issue. Thanks for sharing Jason. Love you.
This is not a happy go-lucky book of poetry about sunshine and flowers. It is an intense drop into the world of depression and hopelessness. Even though in my work I do a fair amount of counseling, I don't think I fully grasped the pure despair of a depressed person until I read this work. Jason Humm has give readers a beautiful gift by allowing us to see the world behind his eyes as he battles through dark hopelessness. I have a much great appreciation for what it is like to fight chemical depression after reading this book. I highly recommend it.
I don't like poetry in general. I find it hard to appreciate...difficult to associate with. To me, in general, it is a difficult medium to properly conveying heavy emotion. I am sure that many will disagree. That's ok.
I received a free copy of this book and agreed to leave a review in exchange. I was interested because of the topic, but avoided reading it because it was poetry. I opened it 20 minutes ago and started to read so I could fulfill my obligation.
I was WRONG to avoid it. Jason Humm has captured thoughts and feelings so vividly that I find myself sitting here, feeling the emotions grow and fade along with each poem.
It made me face emotions that I try way too hard keep buried, way down deep.
The author's intention was successful. Take the time, read the collection, ponder the emotions, understand the struggle.
I did not go into this book with any Illusions. I knew that it was not going to be the proverbial walk in the park, so the dark material was not a surprise at all. From a poetic standpoint, this may not be literary perfection. The stanzas are wild and unkempt, but there is a reason for this in my opinion; it quite well reflects the state of mind the author was in at this point of his life.
I found this book to be important for two main reasons. First of all, the author took the time to introduce these poems by mentioning the suicide rate that the world is currently dealing with, and make his introduction a way to offer help to those who are also suffering with depression and suicidal thoughts. I felt that he had really learned something from his experiences and was able to come from a place of knowledge when extending a plea for others to get help.
The second reason I think this book is worth the time to read and is important, is because it is pure honesty. You can see the rise and fall of the author's moods reflected within his writing, and as he did not reorganise but rather kept the poems in their original order, you are able to see the roller coaster of thoughts, feelings and emotions that he went through during this period of his life as they occurred to him then.
For anyone who is suffering from similar issues or has been through a depression of some magnitude in the past, this book will seem like a familiar home. When you are standing on the edge and you know complete darkness--the soul sucking type of depression where hope is lost, normal life seems gone forever and you are not sure if you will ever--can ever come back from it, then you know what this author has been through. His writing reflects this perfectly.
I was particularly taken with a couple of the poems "Sunday Thoughts" and "House on the Hill." My favourite passage from this book was "Maybe one day someone will fill the house with love, Maybe one day the house will be a home again." This showed the hope for the future that the book is ended with and matched well with the message at the beginning.
I would recommend this book to others who have dealt with depression, are currently dealing with it, or know someone else who is. Reading through this may help them realise that they are not alone and there is help out there.
I was gifted this book to read and review and agreed because I have reviewed poetry collections before and like to think I have an ear for poetry. This book is a collection of works written at an obviously desperate time in the writer's life and the poems reflect his thoughts and feelings.
I was very impressed by this collection, but I must warn, it is not for the faint-hearted as some of the images are raw and very depressing, but there again that is the point of writing this book as a survivor. The book was written, therefore the writer has obviously survived. The poems are technically well written and obey most of the rules of rhythm, some almost sounding like rap.
Some of my favourites are;
`Unshared, Unwanted'
`Sunday Thoughts' and the line `nothing hurts like nothing' certainly struck a chord with me.
There is just a hint of humour in `Just a different kind of survival', should you get a badge for not ending it?
`Welcome Back', `Red is for Passion' and `Frayed Ends' were the most frightening for me and the images stayed with me for a while. It is honest writing like this that always strikes an emotional chord. `Empty Eyes' made me cry. Real tears. And `Not Quite Yet' in my opinion has one of the best lines; `woke up and stepped away from the tracks.'
`Verbal Combat' is brilliant as is 'A Recipe for Death', I could go on but suffice to say, I loved this anthology and admire the bravery of the writer. On a personal note my family has lost a beloved sister to suicide, which took us totally by surprise and these poems have given me a small insight into the despair some people have to face.
It can help.
